It is connected with undertaking specific actions which minimise the adverse environmental impact. GIGA differentiates 3 main fields which establish the Company’s ecological responsibility. They apply to the ecological organisation of the project and the building site, waste sorting and recycling, as well as selecting subcontractors and enabling their ecological footprint resulting from the actions undertaken.

Project Ecological Organisation:

  • Planning deliveries by minimising the required number of truck drives (lower exhaust fumes emission).
  • Including the recovery of the building site and nearby area to the pre-construction condition.
  • Considering the natural cycle in the investment implementation schedule. Paying attention to the hydrological cycle (water circulation) in different seasons of the year so that the performed works impact the local biosphere as little as possible.
  • Works are performed only during the day if there are terrains under anti-noise protection near the investment area.
  • Limiting tree cutting resulting from the project assumptions. Investor consulting within re-planting and planning planting aimed at the compensation of the adverse impact of the forced cutting of trees and shrubbery.
  • If there is a water region near the building site, water courses are controlled and secured so that no chemical substances from the building site enter them.
  • Aquatic animals are transferred to another water region if their water region is polluted or destroyed as a result of the construction works. Such a decision is taken only when it is not possible to restore the hitherto existing water region.
  • If there are wild animals within the investment area, construction is suspended until a procedure is established for securing their relocation.

Waste sorting and recycling

On account of performing each construction, waste is an unavoidable element which may affect the biosphere. GIGA exercises its best efforts to minimise the adverse impact of waste on the local environment and the welfare of inhabitants through:

  • Determining waste which is likely to affect the biosphere in a medium and high degree - additional protection of waste which may emit harmful gases to the biosphere. Furthermore, separate containers are assigned for the storage and disposal of highly harmful waste.
  • Raw materials which may be re-used effectively in the building site after their removal from soils or surfaces (e.g. humus) are re-used with priority in the building site.
  • Subcontractors are sensitive to the problem of waste disposal and the re-use of the full-worth raw materials. The Company strives for not only keeping high standards among its employees but also informing (through training) other employees on the benefits resulting from the responsible raw materials management.
  • There is removal organised of waste which may be re-used in other infrastructure and construction implementations. Such materials include: steel, concrete, gravel, drill cuttings, cement, etc.

The selection of subcontractors and an ecological footprint

  • It is preferred to select local suppliers. It is also verified whether the earth they supply are from local soils. The use of the top soil layer from distant areas for lawns and other green areas may result in the introduction of foreign rodents or pathogens.
  • We try to choose subcontractors who have modern and low-emission equipment. We prefer choosing smaller construction machines which emit less harmful gases during travelling to the building site and during work.
  • We make our employees aware that they should minimise the operation of trucks (cranes, TIR trucks, etc.) which have combustion engines. Our employees inform subcontractor’s construction teams about our good practices.
  • We make employees and managers ready for unpredictable emergency situations in the building site. We provide training to our own employees and supplying materials for subcontractors concerning hazards connected with the spillage/leakage of specific substances during construction works.
